History and Evolution

Cargill Ocean Transportation has developed over its 50-year history, deep expertise in chartering, trading, logistics, operations and risk management. Our business has grown from, and expands upon, Cargill’s inspiring history dating back to 1865.

Business Evolution

Cargill began dabbling in ocean shipping as early as 1937 when it was almost exclusively a U.S.-based grain trading company. It wasn’t until the early 1960’s that Cargill began chartering ships to meet Cargill’s shipping needs and, within a short time, drew Cargill into the business of owning ships.

In the 1990s, external customers provided barely 10 percent of Cargill Ocean Transportation’s traded volumes. Today 60% of our business model is focused on developing our third-party business through a full-service approach using our trading and risk management skills. Our volumes have grown and our external customers account for a half of the 185 million metric tons of physical volume.
